QR code size and print quality

There is no single minimum size that works for every QR code. More encoded data creates more modules, so each module becomes smaller at the same printed width. Camera quality, distance, contrast and the surface also affect recognition. Leave a clear border at least four modules wide around a standard QR code.

A code readable on a desk may fail on a poster viewed from across a room. Make a full-size sample and test from the intended position.

Start with the size of each module

The small squares are called modules. A symbol measuring 29 modules per side needs 37 modules of space when a four-module margin is added on each side. At an overall width of 29.6 mm, each module is 0.8 mm wide; at half that print width, it is 0.4 mm. This calculation is an example, not a universal minimum size.

Shorter content can produce a less dense symbol, which helps on small labels. For a distant poster, also account for the actual viewing distance and the cameras people will use.

Test colour, logo and material together

Dark modules on an evenly light background are a reliable starting point. Transparent areas take on the colour of the surface underneath. Test the finished print on the actual material, including lamination and curved packaging.

Error correction does not allow arbitrary areas to be covered by a logo. Its percentages refer to recoverable codewords, not a safe logo area. Keep the large finder patterns and the margin clear, and test every design change.

How it works

  1. 01

Reduce unnecessary content or use a short dynamic address before shrinking the artwork.

  2. 02

Use SVG or sufficient PNG resolution and keep the code square with its border.

  3. 03

Print on the actual material and test in realistic light, distance and viewing angle.

What to keep in mind

QRinio’s PDF size suggestion is a starting point, not a guarantee. Avoid placing a code across folds, reflective areas or strong curves.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the white space to fit a smaller label?
Do not remove the quiet zone. Give the code more room or shorten its content instead; adjacent text and graphics can interfere with recognition.
Is scanning the PDF on screen enough?
It only checks that rendering. Also test an actual-size print. Printer drivers, scaling, material and finishing can change the result.
